WP4: Heliosphere and Terrestrial Imapct

From BluWiki

Minutes of WP4 Kick-Off Meeting at ESWW5, Brussels

1) Short presentation by participants Each WP4 institution (HVAR, MTA-KFKI-RMKI, Uoulu, NOVELTIS, IEEA, LU-Leuven, ROB and DTU) gave a short presentation of their respective ideas/plans for the WP4 contribution

2) Approach for coordination In order to ensure focus on important space weather aspects and to facilitate the collaboration between WP4 participants and also the collaboration with other work-packaged, it was discussed to focus the research activities on a selected set of important space weather parameters. After some discussion the following set of parameters were agreed upon as a starting point:

• CME/HSS arrival time

• L1 Solar wind parameters

• SEP flux

• Magnetopause location

• Radiation belt flux and Ring Current

• Geomagnetic activity, Dst and Kp

• Auroral oval position

• Ionospheric Joule Heating

• Ionosperic Scintillations/TEC

It was agreed that some of these, such as “Ionospheric Scintillations”, needed further definition. This will be done by the interested participants during the course of the work. The other work packages were encouraged to go through a similar selection of focus parameters.

3) Event selection As an additional step toward a collaborative effort the approach and schedule for selection of a limited set of events (~10) for coordinated study was discussed. The selection criteria were discussed and the following list established (not in order of importance).:

• Different types of events – CMEs and HSSs – Strong/weaker magnetic storms, Kp/Dst – ”Strong/weak” CMEs – Single/multiple CMEs – Solar cycle phase

• Identifiable event (position+initial velocity, density etc.)

• Already selected events, with compiled data

• Prototypes should be covered

• Data coverage

• Start simple

• User relevant events

• Daytime UT (visible from European observatories)

• Historical events

The importance of coordinating the event selection with the other Work Packages, if at all possible, was stressed by several participants

To get the process started DTU presented a preliminary list of 10 events, selected from some of the above criteria (see list given below). One of these (the July 25th 2004 event) were selected to serve as the first event, for which everybody should compile relevant material and send to DTU asap, in order to get a first overview of the amount of data and models that will be available for these event studies. In addition DTU will perform various model runs at the Community Coordinated Modelling Center at NASA. Everybody is encouraged to visit this web-site (http://ccmc.gsfc.nasa.gov/), and maybe submit a model run. If runs are submitted it is encouraged to enter “SOTERIA” as keyword, to facilitate the overview and avoid duplication.

It was agreed that all interested participants should sent suggestions for specific events, including argumentation, to DTU who will be responsible for the coordination/compilation of the event list. The following schedule for the compilation of event material was agreed:

• KO: Event selection criteria established

• KO: First event selected

• Dec. 15. 2008: Event suggestions from participants sent to DTU (tvf@space.dtu.dk)

• Dec. 18. 2008: Suggested list circulated for votation (also to WP3)

• Jan 10. 2009: Data submitted to DTU/Thea by all participants for event nr.1

• Jan.15. 2009: All 10 events selected

• Feb.1.. 2009: Telecon to confirm selection

• Sep. 1. 2009: Workshop for exchange of event results?

• Sep 15. 2009: Data submitted for all 10 events

• Nov.1. 2009: Delivery of list to EU

4) Communications An e-mail list of all participants interested in WP4 as well a list of institutional WP4 main contact persons will be established. This will be done based on a complete e-mail list compiled by the SOTERIA coordinator as well as input from the institutions.

Event list will be sent by e-mail
