Link Spam

Link spam is the process of spamming (usually by anonymous bots) other's pages with links to a particular site. It is a crippling problem on any wiki. Please help keep BluWiki online by checking and removing this spam.

List of commonly spammed pages

Checking for link spam

As of right now, we have found the following most effective:

  • Search BluWiki for commonly spammed keywords, such as "lesbian" or "porn"
  • Add the above "commonly spammed pages" to your watchlist. Changes to these pages will then be bolded and easy to pick out.
  • If reasonable, also make the below page your browser home page.

Dealing with link spam

Unlike vandalism and other kinds of spam, link spammers are especially vicious. They almost always use automated bots to troll the internet, editing wikis and adding spam en masse. These spammers need to be firmly dealt with, to prevent BluWiki from degrading.

First, remove it

Once you have found a page that you suspect is "link spam" in recent changes (or through your watch list), we recommend the following steps:

  1. Click the user name that made the change. This will allow you to see all user contributions
  2. Click the (diff) to see the changes that user made to the page
  3. If it is link spam, click the back button and click the [rollback] link on the user contributions page to remove that edit.
  4. If the user made other contributions, you might want to check these for spam as well.
  5. IMPORTANT: any frequently spammed pages to your watchlist.

Then, block the spammer

To reduce the amount of repeat spam, the following block policy is in effect:

  • First time spammer: Block for 6+ months
  • Repeat spammers: 1+ years

Finally, list repeat keywords to be blacklisted

I'll add them to the spam blacklist to prevent future spam. When adding keywords, please make sure they meet the following requirements:

  1. They are repeatedly used for spam, or are likely to be used by spammers in the future
  2. They aren't normally used by legitimate BluWikians

Doing this will keep the number of "false positives" low.
